The CIECT team is continuously monitoring and testing data usage with regards to YouTube videos; and other multimedia components - embedded within the iKamva platform.  

Video embedded within Lessons page/iKamva:  Using MTN mobile data
  • Logged into iKamva and accessed online environment
  • Clicked on the lesson page and play embedded video from YouTube (pre-recorded presentation by lecturer), 5 minute introductory video.
  • Data used: 10 MB
Note: Data usage was monitored with MTN service provider. 


Video embedded within Lessons page/iKamva: Using Vodacom mobile data
  • Logged into iKamva and accessed online environment
  • Clicked on the lesson page and play embedded video from YouTube (pre-recorded presentation by lecturer), 5 minute introductory video.
  • Data used: ~ 10 MB (360p video quality) 
Note: Data usage was monitored using the Vodacom WiFi dongle browser application.

Access to Google Hangouts: Using Telkom Mobile Data
  • If you are engaged in a Google Hangouts session with more than one person please  be mindful of the following:
  • Switch off camera (it uses data)
  • Mute your sound so that background noises does not cause a disturbance
  • Only unmute when you would like to speak
  • Engaged in a two hour hangout session with 4 CIECT members and sharing a screen/document
  • Data used: 128 MB (Telkom Service Provider)

Access to BigBlueButton/Meetings/Live Lecture via computers (access with Telkom Mobile Data)
Making use of BigBlueButton which is integrated within iKamva allows users to conduct live lectures. During a 55 minute live workshop session, four (4) users were connected making use of their web cameras and sound. All users connected with their Personal Computers/Laptops
**Data used: 500 MB (Telkom Service Provider)


Access to BigBlueButton/Meetings/Live Lecture via Mobile Smartphone (access with Telkom Mobile Data)
During a 90 minutes live lecture session making use of a Mobile Device/Smartphone.
Nine (9) members signed into the session and the facilitator shared a presentation and also shared his screen. 
**Data used: 164MB (Telkom Service Provider)

YouTube Data Usage: Guideline (1 April 2020)
YouTube’s data usage depends on the quality of video you stream (from a low of 144p to 2160p) if your device supports it.
NB: Please note that for 720p quality and higher, YouTube videos are supported at 60FPS (frames per second) in addition to 30FPS (standard frame rate). A higher FPS results in smoother video, but uses more data.

Therefore the range of data used is from 225MB to 16GB per hour, even when embedding the video in a Zero-Rated site.

**The ICS Department will confirm Zero-Rated Policies regarding all Service Providers.
