EMS lecturer Lemay Quesada created an interactive module for her weekly lessons (12 weeks) which focused on the design and development of structured content within the ACF 234 module. The lecturer engaged with the CIECT team to assist her with the use and application of the Lessons, Discussion Forum, and Tests and Quizzes eTools. She has attended various training sessions conducted by the CIECT team over a number of years. The lecturer used the teaching guides and online module exemplar shared by CIECT as a guide to developing her module online.

‘Orientation’ Lesson

An ‘Orientation First Semester” lesson topic was created to familiarise students with the important processes related to requirements for the course, including:

  •   course outline,
  •   assessment and netiquette policies,
  •   reading instructions; and
  •  appropriate communication channels to engage lecturer and peers as they  embark on the first semester.

Weekly ‘Lessons’: Structured Manageable Units

This second-year module, ‘Introduction to Research Methods’ (ACF 234) hosts structured lessons which were segmented according to weekly discipline-specific topics. These lessons are aligned to various research processes, including: research proposal, research questions, hypothesis, research design, literature review, amongst others.

Alignment of specific outcomes to content and activities

The student is aware of the weekly learning outcomes, aligned to a checklist of milestones/activities that the student is expected to complete.

Learning Content embedded within Lessons

The structured lessons entail content, including, PowerPoint Presentations, YouTube Clips, and related articles/readings; and assessment activities.

*It should be noted that ‘section breaks/blocks’ are used to create manageable chunks/sections of content within a lesson page.

*Recent trends in design show that the 21st century online learner is comfortable with more ‘scrolling’. Hence the standards (Instructional design) for scrolling have changed over time. In the past our web-pages did not allow for too much scrolling and the student had to move often to a ‘next page’, in order to complete a section.

Summary: End of Week

The lecturer also provided a summary at the end of each week, emphasising the main content and activities.
