Dual Teaching Venues: Using a Relay System to Physically Teach across Two Venues
Monday, September 28, 2026Dual teaching venues provide lecturers with a practical way to teach students in two separate classrooms at the same time, while maintaining a connected and interactive learning experience.
Dual Teaching: Using a Relay System across two venues
A dual teaching venue consists of two classrooms that are technologically connected to one another. Using a relay system, information presented in one classroom can be shared with the other classroom in real time. This means that a lecturer can conduct a lesson and relay it across two venues. In addition the lecturer and students can communicate across two physical teaching spaces. For example, a lecturer presenting in one classroom can share their presentation, video or other visual content with the second classroom. Students in both venues are therefore able to follow the same lesson and receive the same teaching material, even though they are physically located in different rooms.
Relay System Technology: Connected Spaces and Large Classes
The technology can be used to facilitate the sharing of:
- Video content
- Presentation slides
- Audio
- Lecturer content
- Lab experiments
The relay effectively creates a bridge between the two classrooms. Instead of requiring students to move to a single venue, teaching can take place simultaneously across both connected spaces. This can be particularly useful when class sizes exceed the capacity of a single classroom or when students are distributed between different teaching locations.

Venues equipped for Dual Teaching
Some teaching spaces at UWC have been equipped to support dual teaching:
- School of Pharmacy: Pharmacy Labs D9.1 and D9.2
- Faculty of Education: Education, Classroom 1 and Classroom
- Computational and Mathematical Sciences: Room K1 & 2, N 1 & 2, M 1 & 2
- The Department of Nursing: Rooms 113; 114; 116; and 117 (Bellville Medical Campus)
As teaching continues to evolve, facilities such as these provide staff and students with additional options for delivering and participating in engaging, technology-enabled learning.
