40 705 Interactions with Bioscience and Chemistry Simulations and Worksheets [student usage in 2021]
Monday, February 21, 2022
The CIECT Team (SDA) has integrated 86 Bioscience and 150 Chemistry resources into iKamva (a total of 236 simulations and smart worksheets) for 2021.
Student Usage of Resources
· Bioscience - total usage of 18 511
· Chemistry - total usage of 22 194
The team has recorded a combined usage of 40 705
*Counts every time a student makes use of the resource.
Collaboration: CIECT and Science Faculty
CIECT collaborated with the Science Faculty and Learning Science Ltd (UK) to host pre-lab simulations and smart worksheets. These valuable resources were integrated into the LMS, namely iKamva.
Pedagogical value: Interactive Flipped-classroom Environments
The collaboration has enabled CIECT to effectively:
· Integrate pre-lab simulations into specific online courses (within iKamva)
· Integrate smart worksheets into specific online courses (within iKamva)
· Design interactive online environments (hosting the resources); aligned to online lessons and assessments
· Enable the staff to create interactive, student-centric environments
· Enable the students to engage in a ‘Flipped classroom’ approach [pre-lab simulation; engagement in online lecture; and post-lecture online reflective exercises and self-directed tests]
The success of CIECT’s approach to implementing Learning Science, both before and during the pandemic, and making the simulations accessible to all via iKamva, is reflected in the Learning Science record set by UWC. In the first three months of our partnership with Learning Science (2020), UWC achieved the single largest engagement across Learning Science’s interactive programmes by any university in the world. “I really believe that the success of the CIECT-led innovative approach to rolling out Learning Science can provide a model for other institutions in Africa, and elsewhere, to follow” [Prof Coleman].
