Collaborative Online Teaching and Tutoring
Lecturers, Nandipha Kondlo, Nico Venter, Lisle Svenson, Grandle Opperman, Lwazi Ncoliwe, Cedrick Muleya, Sive Mange and Cynthia Jezile jointly taught the first-year Management (Man 131) module to 643 registered students. This interactive learning environment (created by the Module Coordinator, Nandipha Kondlo) enabled students to actively engage with the lecturers and their peers. There are currently eight (8) lecturers who co-lecture with the assistance of twelve (12) tutors in this module.

Flipped Classroom Approach
Students were expected to access and engage with lecture content prior to online ‘live lectures’ (synchronous via the meetings tool):
  • Lecture content/presentations were shared via the Course Resources eTool
  • Lecture content/ pre-recorded videos shared via the Third Party BigBlueButton (BBB) eTool
During the online ‘live lecture’:
  • The Question and Answer (QA) session enabled students to engage with the lecturer regarding the learning content
Tutorial tasks after the ‘live lecture’ (post):
  • Structured tutorial tasks were shared and students were required to complete and submit.
  • Tutors were able to grade tutorial submissions; and grades were captured within the Gradebook.

Live Lectures and Tutorial sessions via BigBlueButton (BBB)
The lecturers and tutors make use of the Meetings eTool as a platform to host their live lectures and tutorials. The Meetings platform is called BigBlueButton(BBB), which allows the students to connect without incurring any data costs provided that they are connected via the VPN.

Formative Assessments
The lecturers make use of the Tests & Quizzes eTool for formative assessments, including MCQ and Short Answer Essay question types. The eTool enables to set parameters (time, display, feedback).

Tutorial Assessments and Tutor Responsibilities
Tutorial tasks were setup using the Assignments eTool. The students had to attach their completed tasks and upload it to iKamva prior to; or on the expected due date of the task. The tutors were able to retrieve and mark these online submissions. Each tutor was assigned a number of tutorial groups and responsible for setting up the tasks.

Tutorial Results and Feedback available via the Gradebook eTool
Upon setting up the tutorial assessment the marks were automatically linked to the Gradebook eTool. Once the marks were released to students they were able to view the feedback via the Gradebook eTool. In compliance with the POPI Act, each student is only able to view their own individual marks.
