Lecturer, Salo Moodley (Academic Literacy for Business) has created a blended learning environment for first year students.

Face-to-face iKamva Orientation Sessions

The students attended face-to-face iKamva orientation sessions, on 1 March 2023. The lecturer wanted to ensure that the students understood were able to navigate and engage in an online environment.

Setting the scene: Online welcome and guidance prior to lectures

The lecturer created a structured online environment, including:

  • Overview of the module;
  • Welcome message, including “Do’s at the university”; and
  • Announcements – whereby the students are provided with a weekly “roadmap”.

Online weekly structured course information – in order to guide face-to-face discussionThe lecturer releases her eLessons on a weekly basis (scaffolded approach). Hence, the students are able to prepare for the face-to-face lecture and discussions. ‘eLessons’ include: key documents such as timetable/schedule, module guide, and weekly content/learning material (weekly objectives, readings and presentations).

Post lecture activities

The students are expected to submit assignments, tutorial activities and also complete online quizzes.  The lecturer and tutors are then able to download and mark these and give feedback to students.
