Narrated Videos: Final Year Social Work students submit Assessment
Friday, March 10, 2023Lecturer Shernaaz Carelse (Social Work Dept.) instructed 80
students to create a narrated video related to a specific
topic, namely, ‘State of the Nation Address’. The aim of this assignment was to
highlight a form of oppression, marginalisation and or social or economic
exclusion that they regard as prevalent in the South African context currently. The
assignment was to be submitted in a 10 minute video format.
The lecturer collaborated with the CIECT team to ensure that
the students were trained on how to create narrated videos, in order to submit
their assignment (for SCW413 Advanced Social Policy & Planning Module).
Online training for large class (avoid loadshedding on
campus)
The CIECT team and the lecturer discussed the benefits of an
online teaching approach, covering the technical aspects of digital video
production, to accommodate the large class and also circumvent the potential of
load-shedding at the training venue on campus. The session would be recorded
and uploaded to the Learning Management System, iKamva for
later review.
Multimedia training: Benefits for students
In recent times, digital literacies include multimedia
literacies required for academic purposes and the world of work. The workshop
enabled the students to acquire the following skills:
- Image manipulation
- Audio narration and editing
- Video editing
CIECT reiterates that lecturers should be
cognisant of the need for student training, especially when making use of
multimedia for assessment purposes. This kind of assignment presents the
lecturer with multimodal evidence of the student's learning.
