Education Faculty: Podcasting - An alternative to traditional assessment methods [training of 224 students]

Education lecturer Thembisa Kosi contacted CIECT to assist with training students in preparation to complete a Podcast assignment for the module, Foundation Practical Learning (FPL101).
Students tasked with creating Audio Assignment (Podcast)
Students were tasked to create five (5) Podcast segments for an assignment, ranging from 30 seconds to 3 minutes. The lecturer assigned groups and provided clear instructions and outcomes required for each podcast segment.
Facilitated training: Hybrid approach
The CIECT team facilitated this training for 224 first year Education students (FPL101). A Hybrid approach was chosen to facilitate the large class, with students attending the training face-to-face and online.

The students engaged with basic theory related to audio production, including scripting and noting down ideas to create a script. The training included:
- Scripting: Planning phase included noting down of main ideas, as a guide when recording audio.
- Production: Record the best audio. How planning can lead to better quality footage before post production.
Post Production Phase
This phase of the training included:
- Editing audio footage
- Removing errors in audio recording
- Adding different members’ audio files
- Adding background track
- Audio balancing
