Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing the way research is conducted. From identifying patterns in large datasets and supporting literature reviews to assisting with writing, data analysis and generating research ideas, AI tools are becoming increasingly accessible to researchers across disciplines. For universities, the question is no longer simply whether AI should be used in research; instead, the focus is on how it can be used responsibly, effectively and ethically.  

The use and Potential benefits of AI in Scientific Research
One of the most significant advantages of AI is its ability to process large amounts of information quickly. Researchers working with extensive datasets can use AI to identify patterns, relationships and trends that may be difficult to detect manually. AI can also support researchers throughout different stages of the research process. It can assist with brainstorming research questions, organising information, summarising literature, analysing data, improving the clarity of written work and supporting the development of research proposals. Research published in Nature Human Behaviour provides evidence of the growing impact of AI on scientific research. Gao and Wang's 2024 study, Quantifying the use and potential benefits of artificial intelligence in scientific research, found that AI use and its associated benefits are widespread across scientific disciplines. The study also found that AI-related benefits have grown substantially over time. This suggests that, when used appropriately, AI can become a valuable research assistant — helping researchers work more efficiently and enabling them to spend more time on higher-level thinking, interpretation and decision-making.

AI can support researchers by:
  • Analysing large and complex datasets
  • Identifying patterns and trends
  • Supporting literature searches and reviews
  • Generating ideas and possible research questions
  • Assisting with data analysis and interpretation
  • Improving grammar, structure and readability
  • Supporting coding and computational tasks
  • Helping researchers explore new areas of inquiry
  • Reducing time spent on repetitive tasks
However, increased efficiency does not automatically mean better research.

Challenges and Risks of AI Usage: A Narrowing in Scientific Enquiry 
AI systems can produce information that appears convincing while being incorrect. Generative AI tools can create inaccurate statements, fabricated references or misleading interpretations. This is particularly concerning in research, where accuracy, evidence and traceability are fundamental. There is also a risk that researchers may begin to accept AI-generated information without sufficiently questioning or verifying it. A 2024 article published in Nature by Lisa Messeri and M. J. Crockett explores this concern in detail. In Artificial intelligence and illusions of understanding in scientific research, the researchers argue that AI may create an illusion of understanding — where researchers believe they understand a subject more deeply because an AI system has produced an explanation or analysis. The authors also warn that widespread use of AI could contribute to a narrowing of scientific enquiry. If researchers increasingly rely on AI systems trained on existing knowledge and datasets, some questions, methods and perspectives may receive more attention than others. In other words, AI could help researchers produce more while potentially understanding less if human judgement and critical thinking are replaced by automation.

Important risks include:
  • Accuracy: AI-generated information may be incorrect or incomplete.
  • Hallucinations: AI may generate information or references that appear plausible while being false.
  • Bias: AI systems can reproduce or amplify biases present in their training data.
  • Research integrity: Researchers need to ensure that AI use does not compromise academic honesty or the integrity of their research.
  • Privacy and confidentiality: Sensitive research data should not be entered into AI systems without appropriate safeguards.
  • Over-reliance: Excessive dependence on AI may reduce researchers' opportunities to develop and exercise their own expertise.
  • Loss of human judgement: Research requires interpretation, creativity, critical thinking and ethical decision-making — areas where human researchers remain essential.

AI should assist research, not replace the researcher
The most effective approach is to view AI as a research support tool rather than a replacement for researchers. Researchers remain responsible for the quality, accuracy, originality and integrity of their work. AI can assist with various tasks, while researchers remain responsible for evaluating its output, verifying sources, questioning assumptions and making the final decisions.
