Lecturers, Lindiwe Khotseng, Orbett Alexander, Nuralli Mohamed, Francis Ntumba and Candice Franke have implemented a blended approach for the first-year Chemistry 152 module. This approach includes in-person instruction which is blended with online learning activities. This allowed students to engage with learning content in various ways and includes the use of virtual pre-lab simulations and interactive online worksheets.

Structured Learning Materials

In addition, students have access to course materials such as lecture notes, recorded lectures, practice problems and videos which can be accessed at any time- via the institutional Learning Management System (LMS) -iKamva. Through incorporating blended learning in the teaching approach, lecturers are able to provide students with more flexibility and structured support to engage in specific learning content and related assessment activities.

Overall, the blended approach is an effective method to engage first-year students more actively in the study of Chemistry.
